The people who build the solution work where it is used

Forward deployed engineering is a model in which the engineers who design and build the solution work inside the client's environment, rather than remotely or by handing over specifications. The name comes from military vocabulary: operating at the point of action.

  • Embedded with your team

We learn how the work really flows and where it breaks, not just what the requirements say.

  • Accountable end to end

One team is responsible from the assessment until the solution is running. If something fails in production, there is no third party to hand it off to.

  • Grounded in your real operation

We start from your data, your systems and your constraints, and validate the solution against them before expanding the scope.

  • What we learn flows back into our platforms

The problems we see repeating across real operations become our own platforms, such as Civis.

Three phases, the same team from start to finish

The five stages of our methodology are grouped into three moments of the engagement. The scope of each is defined with each client.

  1. Phase 1

    Discover and design

We understand the challenge inside your operation, prioritize goals and define the route with documented decisions. We agree from the start on how the result will be measured.

  2. Phase 2

    Build and deliver

We move in stages with visible results and validate each delivery against the goals before expanding the scope or going to production.

  3. Phase 3

    Operate and hand over

We document and transfer so your team can run the solution on its own, or we run it for you. Each project defines its support, warranty and evolution model.

Operations where the solution cannot be built from the outside

Government, transportation, financial services, telecommunications and healthcare: legacy systems, regulatory requirements and continuity that cannot be interrupted. That is where a team inside the operation makes the difference.

What people usually ask us

What is forward deployed engineering?

It is a working model in which the engineers who build the solution embed in the client's environment: they work with the client's team, data and systems, and are accountable end to end for the result. It is also known as FDE.

How is it different from traditional consulting?

A consultancy typically delivers an assessment or a document, and its responsibility ends there. In forward deployed engineering the same team designs, builds and leaves the solution running, and is measured by the result in production.

And from a software vendor or a systems integrator?

A vendor ships its product and an integrator typically implements a scope that is already defined. Our engineers start from the operational problem and choose the technology afterwards: multicloud without lock-in, and our own platforms only when they fit.

Do the engineers work on the client's premises?

They work embedded with your team. The arrangement —on site, remote or hybrid— is agreed in the scope of each project.

What happens when the project ends?

We document and transfer the knowledge so your team can run the solution. Each project defines its warranty and evolution model, and if you prefer to delegate operations we offer managed operations (CloudOps) on your own cloud account.
